12 Ostrich Eggs and 2 Emu Eggs

Ostrich and Emu Eggs
Last year I had a conversation with my cousin who works as a head nurse in Saudi Arabia in the Kingdom of Ryadh Her stories about living over there would make your hair curl honestly, she has seen it all.( Stories for another day ladies)So.............................. back to my egg story!

She knows I love to make pysanky eggs and I was desperate as always to find goose eggs, this is how the conversation went between us, I said I wish I could find something other than chicken eggs, I wanted to work on something bigger than chicken eggs, living so far North in Canada we are limited to what we can get up here. And that conversation ended on that note.

On her next visit back to Canada to see her mother(my father's sister), she called me and asked if we could get together, so I went over to my aunt's home to see my little cousin. She handed me an ostrich egg, well I was floored, I was so amaized and happy to have this precious gift from her that she brought all that way( the other side of the pond she calls it),I could not stop hugging her and thanking her I was so happy and tickled !!!

She said Diane you know eggs come in a dozen !!!!!!!!! Then rolls over this huge suitcase with 11 more ostrich eggs and 2 emu eggs all wrapped in lots and lots of bubble wrap !!!!!!!!!!!

I was so surprised I was speechless !!
Imagine if you will travelling all the way from Saudi Arabia with 14 eggs in a suitcase to give to someone!
My little cousin she is special! No one other than my hubby and my children has ever done anything so nice as that for me, she actually listened to me, actually heard what I said to her, that alone floored me .My little cousin is special ,and I just love her to bits!

I have yet to work on them,my life has been turned upside down last year with my mother's illness and eventual death
I can't seem to get my normal back, do you know what I mean?? I miss my Mom so much,it took something away from me I may never recover, it occupies my mind more than my hobbies.

Doing my eggs was the furthest thing on my mind, and I still haven't done any since then,I need to make new and fresh dyes, then maybe the spirit will move me to do them again.

I thought you might like to see my ostrich and emu eggs, since then I have been given another emu egg from a cousin who lives out in Dartmouth in Nova Scotia, she is a little darling too!

Does anyone out there in blogland work on ostrich eggs I could use some pointers and hints ,where and how to begin.Someone.... anyone???

I don't know nothing about eggs, except how to cook up a mess. But I do know about losing a loved one and the pain that follows. We lost our daughter 3 years ago and it still hurts every single day. I never drew any real comfort from words that well meaning people sometimes offered, people who had not been there. But I will tell you that time does not heal the pain, but it does dull it a little more everyday. So just take it one day at a time and focus on something you love and the void will fill in a little. Your mother wants you to be happy.

those are very big eggs! Such a very sweet cousin indeed.
In regards to getting your normal back...it never does come back, you have to create a new normal.
Trust me I have years of experience of creating new "normals".

Wow, what a wonderful cousin. I had to laugh to imagine baggage inspectors finding those eggs. Is that dark blue color the natural way emu eggs are? My good friend is from the Ukraine and makes beautiful eggs. I'd ask her about working with ostrich eggs but she's in the Ukraine now.

I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. I think this must be one of the hardest things in life to go through. I am thankful each day that I still have my mother.

What a fabulous gift! I cannot imagine carrying them that far in a suitcase. Are the Emu eggs really that color or are they dyed?

I have a friend who raised ostrich and was always selling her eggs. I know that they are really hard and she always used a little Dre*mel saw to cut them. I can't wait to see what you do with them.

Hi! I have done a few ostrich eggs myself and suggest you get the pamphlet from the Ukrainian Gift Shop in Minnesota, it has great ideas for dividing the egg up, they also carry the large plastic tubs that are ostrich sized for the dye baths. It was a wonderful gift from your cousin!

I don't have a clue about Ostrich eggs, but I'm sure someone in blogland will point you in the right direction.
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom. I am quite familiar with that pain. It never ever goes away. My Mom has been gone six yrs and I miss her every day of my life.
The first two years I cried for her almost every day. Time does dull the pain, but doesn't make me miss her less.
hugs

Hello dear Diane,

How wonderful of your cousin to bring you all those eggs from Saudi Arabia no less! WOW! I had seen ostrich eggs before but never emu ones...love their colour!

I can understand your pain from losing your mother...I went through the same thing when my dad passed away. I couldn't seem to function or get interested in anything for a long time. You are still in the grieving process and only you will know when it's time to get back into your hobbies. Big hugs. xoxo

You do have the sweetest cousin. The ostrich eggs are very large and I thought you had already painted the emu eggs...they are a very pretty color. I have no idea how to work on them but I know when you get to them they will be just beautiful. You'll know when you are ready to start your projects. All I can tell you...and this is just me, the pain does easy but there is always a sadness. My mom passed away in 1990 and my granma many years before that.....I still think of them everyday.
Blessing to you, Linda

p.s. I enjoyed reading your tag, it was fun getting to know you. L

Wow! How wonderful are these relatives of yours. That was some undertaking... bringing all these eggs, all that ways!

The pretty dark blueish ones, must be emu eggs! I've never seen either, for real. Thanks for the photo.

I wasn't reading here, during your Mother's illness or at her passing. I'm sorry for all that meant and still means, in your life. I hope that working on these eggs, does help you get your normal back. I really hope so.

Hugs,
